If you’ve had this very intimate, slightly uncomfortable service done by veteran esthetician Michele Sampson-Smith, you know that a little chocolate and laughter goes a long way in easing the discomfort, especially when waxing for the first time.

What is a Brazilian Waxing?

Brazilian waxing involves the removal of all hair in the pelvic area, front and back, while sometimes leaving a thin strip of hair on the pubis (sometimes referred as a landing strip). Practiced regularly, depilatory waxing weakens and slows hair regrowth and produces results that last longer and longer.

Wellness Care Day Spa uses a renowned, soothing depilatory wax manufactured in France. This non-strip wax moisturizes the skin while encapsulating the hair for quick, easy removal.

“I like to call it fleeting pain,” says Smith who freelances as an Educational Trainer for BABOR Cosmetics.  “Most people have never had hair pulled from the follicle in such a delicate area, but the discomfort is gone before you know it. The more endorphins you can release during this service, the better.”

Minimizing Discomfort

Smith regularly offers chocolate to her first-time waxing clients to help ease the anxieties. “For most women, chocolate has a way of hugging your conscience and relaxing your mind. When your mind relaxes, so does your body which includes muscles, capillaries and hair follicles.”

Laughter is the other balm Smith offers clients nervous about the treatment. Once the client intake form is completed, the relationship building begins. Smith takes the time to get to know her clients and allows them to express their fears and concerns. “Everyone has something that makes them laugh or smile. More you focus on laughing the less noticeable the pain will be.”

Recommended Preparations

1. Trim the hair to at least ¼ in. before waxing. The longer the hair, the more painful. (Do not trim hair less than 1/4in. Wax will not adhere properly.)

2. Take Tylenol or Advil 30-minutes before your service. Minimizes pain and thins blood flow.

3. Gently exfoliate the area the night before. It helps remove dead skin cells allowing easier hair removal.

4. Relax and Laugh!

Smith says the key to a successful Brazilian waxing experience is finding a skilled therapist YOU feel comfortable with. “This is a very intimate service and many women are very self-conscious about exposing themselves. I am very sensitive to that. Do your homework. Get referrals or ask to contact some existing clients, if necessary. Don’t trust your Brazilian waxing to just anyone!”

Smith also recommends after-care regimens that address waxing and shaving irritations and ingrown hairs.
